Early Life and Family Background

Azmatullah Omarzai was born on 24 March 2000 in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province. The region is located in the eastern part of the country, and the International Cricket Council identifies Nurgal District in Kunar as his place of origin.

Like many young Afghan cricketers, Omarzai developed his interest in cricket before becoming a recognised name in the sport.

His early progress came through local cricket and domestic competitions, where his ability to contribute with both bat and ball helped him stand out.

There is limited reliable public information about his parents, siblings and other family members. Therefore, specific family details should not be assumed or presented as confirmed facts.

Beginning of His Professional Cricket Career

Omarzai’s progress became more visible in 2017 when he represented Mis Ainak Region in the Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One-Day Tournament. He made his List A debut during the competition in August 2017.

This was an important opportunity because List A cricket gave him experience in a more competitive format. He was able to develop his batting and bowling skills against senior domestic players while working towards higher-level selection.

His performances helped bring him into Afghanistan’s youth cricket system. In 2018, he was selected for Afghanistan’s squad for the Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Playing at an international youth tournament gave him valuable exposure and the chance to compete against promising players from other cricketing nations.

The same year, he also became part of Paktia’s squad for the first Afghanistan Premier League. He made his T20 league debut for the Paktia Panthers on 7 October 2018.

These opportunities allowed him to gain experience in different formats at a relatively young age.

Domestic Cricket and Development as an All-Rounder

Domestic cricket played a major role in shaping Omarzai’s career. He continued to feature in Afghanistan’s domestic competitions and gradually built a reputation as a player who could offer more than one skill.

One notable achievement came in the 2020 Shpageeza Cricket League. Omarzai shared the Player of the Tournament honour, reflecting the impact he had made during the competition.

His development was not limited to senior domestic cricket. He also represented Afghanistan in age-group and emerging-player competitions, including the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup.

These tournaments provided further experience against players from other cricketing nations.

The combination of domestic cricket, youth-level exposure and franchise opportunities helped prepare him for international cricket.

By this stage, Omarzai was developing into a bowling all-rounder who could bat with intent and provide useful overs with his medium-fast bowling.

International Cricket Debut

Omarzai received his first opportunity in Afghanistan’s senior national team in January 2021. He made his One Day International debut against Ireland on 21 January 2021 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

An international debut is an important milestone for any young cricketer, but it also brings a different level of pressure. Omarzai had to adjust to facing established international players while learning the demands of representing his country.

He later made his T20 International debut against Bangladesh on 3 March 2022. The shorter format offered another opportunity to use his power-hitting ability and bowling skills in a fast-paced environment.

His Test debut came against Zimbabwe on 26 December 2024. This marked his entry into all three formats of international cricket.

Breakthrough Year in International Cricket

Azmatullah Omarzai’s career reached a new level in 2024. He became one of Afghanistan’s most consistent performers in One Day International cricket, contributing important runs and wickets throughout the year.

He scored 417 runs and took 17 wickets in 14 ODIs in 2024. His batting average was above 52, showing how effectively he converted opportunities into valuable contributions.

Two innings particularly helped establish his reputation. Against Sri Lanka in January 2024, he scored an unbeaten 149 while Afghanistan were chasing a target of 382.

He came to the crease when the team was in serious trouble and built a remarkable 242-run partnership with Mohammad Nabi. Although Afghanistan did not complete the chase, Omarzai’s innings became one of the most memorable performances of his career.

Later, he scored an unbeaten 86 from just 50 balls against South Africa. His aggressive batting helped Afghanistan secure an important victory and win the ODI series.

These performances demonstrated that Omarzai could handle pressure against strong international teams.

ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024

One of the biggest milestones in Azmatullah Omarzai’s career came in January 2025, when he won the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024 award.

The recognition followed an outstanding year in which he contributed with both bat and ball. His 417 runs and 17 wickets in 14 matches made him one of Afghanistan’s leading players in the format.

The award was especially significant for Afghanistan cricket because Omarzai became the country’s first player to receive a major ICC annual men’s individual award.

It was recognition not only of his individual performances but also of Afghanistan’s growing strength in international cricket.

Rise to the No. 1 Position in ICC ODI All-Rounder Rankings

In March 2025, Omarzai reached the top position in the ICC Men’s ODI All-Rounder Rankings.

This was another major achievement in his international career. He moved ahead of his Afghanistan teammate Mohammad Nabi, who had been among the leading all-rounders in the format for several years.

His rise reflected the consistency of his contributions. He was no longer viewed only as a promising young player; he had become one of the leading all-rounders in international ODI cricket.

ICC rankings change regularly, so his No. 1 position should be understood as an achievement reached in March 2025, rather than a permanent ranking.

Azmatullah Omarzai IPL Career

The Indian Premier League gave Omarzai another opportunity to compete against leading international players. He was signed by Gujarat Titans for the 2024 season and made his IPL debut against Mumbai Indians on 24 March 2024.

His first IPL season provided experience in a highly competitive T20 environment. Playing alongside established international cricketers helped him understand the demands of franchise cricket in India.

For the 2025 season, Punjab Kings secured his services at the IPL auction for ₹2 crore. The franchise added him to strengthen its pace-bowling options and provide additional batting depth.

Punjab Kings retained him for the 2026 season, according to the official IPL retention list.

Omarzai’s IPL role is valuable because he offers two skills in one overseas-player position. He can provide pace bowling and contribute useful runs in the lower middle order.
