Age and Early Life
Ilhan Omar was born on October 4, 1982, in Mogadishu, Somalia. She turned 44 in October 2026.
Her childhood was shaped by the conflict in Somalia. When she was eight years old, her family fled the country’s civil war. They spent approximately four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before eventually resettling in the United States during the 1990s.
Omar moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her family in 1997. The city later became central to her education, community work, and political career.
Growing up in a new country brought the challenges of adapting to a different culture, language, and education system. Her experience as a refugee later became an important part of her public biography and political identity.
Her grandfather also influenced her interest in politics. According to her official congressional biography, he encouraged her to take an interest in civic life and public affairs.
These early experiences helped shape her later focus on immigration, refugee resettlement, and the participation of underrepresented communities in government.
Education
Omar attended Edison High School in Minneapolis and graduated in 2001. She later enrolled at North Dakota State University in Fargo, where she completed her undergraduate education in 2011.
Her studies included political science and international studies. This academic background provided a foundation for her later work in public policy, government, and community advocacy.
After completing her degree, Omar worked in education and public service. She became involved in community education at the University of Minnesota and served as a policy fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
She also worked as a senior policy aide for the Minneapolis City Council. These roles gave her experience with local government and policy development before she ran for elected office.
Her career demonstrates a transition from community-level work into state and federal politics.

She later married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, divorced him in 2011, and reconciled with Hirsi before legally marrying him in 2018.
She subsequently married political consultant Tim Mynett in 2020. Because personal circumstances can change, readers should check recent reliable reporting or official statements before publishing a claim about her current marital status.
How Many Children Does Ilhan Omar Have?
Ilhan Omar has three children. She has generally kept some aspects of their private lives away from public attention, so a biography should focus on verified information rather than unconfirmed details about them.
Her experience raising a family while serving in public office is one part of her life beyond congressional debates and political campaigns.
Political Career and Major Achievements
Ilhan Omar’s political career began at the local level before she moved into state and federal government. Her experience in community education, public policy, and local government helped prepare her for elected office.
Minnesota House of Representatives
In 2016, Omar was elected to represent District 60B in the Minnesota House of Representatives. She took office in January 2017 and served until January 2019.
During her time in the state legislature, she worked on issues involving education, economic opportunity, and the needs of Minnesota communities. Her election was also a significant milestone for Somali-American representation in state politics.
Her state-level experience gave her a platform to pursue a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Election to the U.S. Congress
Omar won Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District election in November 2018 and began serving in Congress on January 3, 2019.
Her election received national attention because she became one of the first two Muslim-American women elected to Congress. She was also the first African refugee to serve as a member of the House of Representatives, according to the official congressional biography.
She has since been reelected and serves in the 119th Congress, covering the 2025–2027 congressional term.
Committee Assignments in 2026
Congressional committees examine legislation, conduct oversight, and help shape federal policy. Omar’s assignments give her opportunities to participate in debates about government spending, education, employment, and workers’ protections.
According to the official House Clerk and Omar’s congressional website, her current committee assignments include:
- House Budget Committee: Deals with federal budget priorities and the broader budget process.
- House Committee on Education and the Workforce: Addresses education, employment, and workforce policy.
- Subcommittee on Workforce Protections: Examines issues involving workplace safety and employee protections.
- Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions (HELP): Covers policy matters relating to employment, labor, health, and pensions.
Her congressional office also lists her involvement in several caucuses focused on progressive policy, healthcare, civil rights, and other public issues.

Education and Student Debt
Omar has supported proposals intended to make higher education more affordable and reduce the financial burden of student debt. Education policy has been a recurring part of her public agenda.
Healthcare
She supports expanding access to healthcare and has advocated for Medicare for All, a proposal to establish a broader publicly funded healthcare system.

Foreign Policy

Ilhan Omar Net Worth in 2026
Ilhan Omar’s exact net worth is not established by a single verified public figure. Financial disclosure forms provide information about reportable assets, income, liabilities, and certain financial interests, but they do not always establish an individual’s precise net worth.
A filing indexed by the U.S. House Clerk in May 2026 identifies Omar’s annual financial disclosure record for the 2025 reporting year. The existence of that filing alone does not establish her total wealth.
Her income as a member of Congress includes her congressional salary. Other reportable income or financial interests must be evaluated using the relevant disclosure documents rather than unverified online estimates.
For that reason, websites publishing a specific net-worth figure should be treated cautiously unless they explain their methodology and identify reliable supporting records.
Recent News and Public Scrutiny
On October 12, 2026, the Associated Press and Reuters reported that federal authorities searched Omar’s Washington-area home as part of an ongoing investigation. At the time of those reports, officials had not fully disclosed the investigation’s scope.
Omar has previously denied allegations concerning her immigration history, and the existence of a search does not establish that a person has committed a crime.
Because this is a developing matter, readers should check subsequent statements from law enforcement, Omar’s office, and established news organisations before publishing additional details.
Any new allegations or legal developments should be attributed to their sources and distinguished from established findings.
